October 20, 2009 - USGS Scientist to Give Presentation on Tsunami Research

(PRESS RELEASE) In the wake of the tsunami tragedy, several teams of scientists from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and other U.S. and overseas agencies have visited American Samoa to study the tsunami event and its impact on the islands. What they are learning will help improve predictions about the risk of tsunamis to the islands, the likely impacts of future tsunamis, and ways to mitigate those impacts.

Dr. Guy Gelfenbaum, Oceanographer with the USGS will give a
presentation on what these scientists are doing here and what they have learned so far. The talk will take place this Thursday, October 22, at 3 p.m. in the Lecture Hall at the American Samoa Community College , and is open to anyone interested. Dr. Gelfenbaum conducted similar studies in Indonesia after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, and information on that work can be found online at: http://soundwaves.usgs.gov/2005/03/ .
