Polices and Procedures : Independent Study |
|
| Independent Study is an option for students who
are unable to enroll in a course due to a schedule conflict, class
cancellation, program requirement change, graduation or a transfer
requirement. |
Initiating an Independent Study contract is based
entirely on an instructor’s willingness to do so. Instructors
will not receive extra compensation for Independent Study courses
taught.
Independent Study contracts can only be approved for courses in the
current catalog. Independent Study contracts are not valid for courses
offered during Summer Sessions, all laboratories, American Samoa Teacher
Education Program (ASTEP) courses, Distance Learning courses or Service
Learning courses.
An Independent Study course contract must include a copy of a course
syllabus commensurate in content and coverage to the actual course,
with modification only to the meeting times, dates and topical outline.
|
| Independent Study contracts are available from the
Admissions and Records Office. Contracts must be completed by the
instructor in consultation with the student, and approved by the Department
Chairperson and the Dean of Instruction. The form and registration
(including payment) should be completed whenever possible during the
registration period or before the end of the third week of instruction.
Independent study contracts must be filed with the Admissions and
Records Office, with copies given to the student, instructor and Dean
of Instruction. Final grades for independent study students are submitted
with the instructor’s regular grade reports at the end of the
semester. A student is allowed a maximum of two independent study
classes per semester. |
| Credits earned through independent study are not covered
under federal financial aid. Please check with the Financial Aid Office
for more information. |
