The Student Services division of the American Samoa Community College (ASCC) has announced that graduation ceremonies for fall 2006 will take place on Friday, December 15th at 10:00 a.m. in the College gymnasium. Swains Island Delegate to the Legislature of American Samoa and commercial pilot Alexander Eli Jennings will give the commencement address for the ceremony. Read More...
December 5, 2006 - ASCC Hosts Archaeology of the Polynesian Homeland Conference
The American Samoa Community College (ASCC) hosted the first ever Archaeology conference in American Samoa last week when 37 international participants from Tonga, the Independent State of Samoa, Fiji, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Australia, Hawaii, Japan, Canada, the USA, England, and France gathered to take part in the Archaeology of the Polynesian Homeland Conference. “Through the conference, we achieved a much better understanding of regional dynamics in the Samoa-Tonga-Fiji triangle in ancient times,” explained Dr. David Addison, Archaeology instructor at ASCC. December 7, 2006 - ASCC Nursing Department to Hold Recognition Ceremony this Tuesday
Each year in December, the Nursing Department at the American Samoa Community College (ASCC) holds a Recognition Ceremony for the students who have earned their Certificates of Proficiency in Practical Nursing or Associate of Science degrees in Registered Nursing. The Fall 2006 ceremony takes place this coming Tuesday, December 12, at 6 p.m. in the ASCC auditorium (separate from the general graduation ceremony on December 15th). Read More... The University of Hawaii (UH), with its ten campuses of universities and community colleges spread across the 50th State, has long attracted a large number of transfer students from American Samoa as well as the other American Pacific territories. Like most universities, UH charges a significantly higher tuition for “non-resident” students from outside the State of Hawaii. However, for many years, students from the Pacific islands enjoyed the benefit of only having to pay “resident” tuition while attending UH, a favored status which, along with the close proximity of Hawaii to home, made UH a perfect choice for students from American Samoa. Read More... December 27, 2006 - ASCC SEEDS Club Conducts 2nd Island Ecology Comparison Field Excursion
18 students in the SEEDS (Strategies for Ecology Education, Development and Sustainability) Club at the American Samoa Community College (ASCC) returned to Tutuila last week after spending five days in Savai’i conducting geology and ecology research. Last semester, the SEEDS Club conducted their initial research comparing the islands of Upolu and Tutuila. The Ecological Society of America was so pleased with their findings that the group received a small grant to further the study to include the island of Savai’i. These dedicated students fundraised by hosting the first “Big Man on Campus” competition this past semester, and holding several bake sales to obtain the additional funds needed to cover the cost of the trip. Read More... December 27, 2006 - Aquaculture Internship Program at ASCC Promotes Industry Development
Internship opportunities provided to eligible Marine Science students at the American Samoa Community College (ASCC) have helped to promote an emerging industry in the Territory. Fay Ondelacy, Francis Leiato, Jeff Speicher, Daystar Parker, and Pita Gurr all spent time throughout the past semester aiding Sea Grant Aquaculture Extension Agent John Gonzales as he provided technical support to aquaculture farms throughout Tutuila. In the process, these interns learned the value of overcoming unforeseen challenges through teamwork, gained experience in fundamental aquaculture practices and culture techniques, and witnesseed the aquaculture potential in Tutuila.
