This past Friday night, the SEEDS (Strategies for Ecology Education Development and Sustainability) Environmental Club at the American Samoa Community College (ASCC) hosted the “Big Man on Campus” competition. SEEDS organized the competition not only as a fundraiser for their environmental research trip to Savai’i in December, but also as an opportunity to showcase the talented and creative gentlemen of the College. The six contestants showcased an eye-catching combination of intelligence, ability, and of course good looks. The contestants competed in five categories: Body Building; Natural Man; Talent; Improvisation Skills; and Traditional Wear with Personality Questions.
Contestant number one was Forest Duldulao, 24, the son of Nellie and June Duldulao from Nuuuli. He is a Marine Science major and was sponsored by Monty’s creations and the SEEDS club. Contestant number two, Nelly Lafaele of Leone, is a double major in Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. He is the son of Mac and Margaret Lafaele, and was sponsored by his parents and club G2G (Got To Graduate). Contestant number three was Anthony Lafaele of Nuuuli, a 22 year old Criminal Justice major. He is the son of Antonio and Julianna Lafaele and was sponsored by The Outsiderz. Contestant number four, Brandon Pualau, 22, is also a Criminal Justice major. Sponsored by Alexander and Rowena Jennings and his fellow 685 club members, Brandon is the proud son of Fa’amata and Tuluiga Pualau. Contestant number five, Fa’afetai Shane Ta’afua of Ili’ili, 20, is a Theater major. The son of Mr. Pene and Mrs. Serefina Ta’afua, Shane was sponsored by the Chosen Few. The 6th and final contestant was Soli Sipunu of Nu’uuli, 19, sponsored by Once Were Warriors (a/k/a Oh Dub Dub). Soli is a Criminal Justice major and the son of Paulo and Tilotilo Sipunu. |
The evening was filled with excitement and laughter as the contestants battled to impress the judges and audience. The capacity crowd certainly got their money’s worth, as the contestants turned on their charm and worked the runway. The young men shone brightly in the spotlight, not only with their remarkable talents, including fa’akaupaki dancing, but also with the large amount of body oil they used to accentuate their physiques. The ASCC auditorium was adorned with large floral displays and golden coconuts.

There were three special prizes, Crowds Choice, Mr. Physique and Mr. Humor. Points-wise, it was a close call between Soli and Shane, but the latter took first place in Mr. Humor and Mr. Physique as well. After all was said, done and danced, Mr. Fa’afetai Shane Ta’afua edged ahead of some very worthy competition to take the title of “Big Man on Campus,” with all the bragging rights that go with it. 1st runner-up went to Mr. Soli Sipunu, followed by Mr. Anthony Lafaele taking 2nd runner-up. 3rd runner-up went to Mr. Brandon Pualau, with Mr. Nelly Lafaele taking 4th runner-up and Mr. Forest Duldulao taking 5th runner-up.
The night would not have been possible without sponsors. On behalf of the contestants and the SEEDS club, a big Fa’afetai Tele Lava to: Accords Collision and Towing; Avalon Travel; Bluesky Communications; Dollar Saver; GAAP Inc.; Godinet Rental; KHJ Radio Station; Krystal's Burgers; Malama Channel; Miss American Samoa Inc.; MJ Audio; St. Josephs Catholic Church; and Faipule Manu Talamoa. Entertainment was performed by Game Four and the Ice Cream Fan, from members of the Once Were Warriors, and The Outsiderz clubs.
Special thanks to the evening’s MCs, Lupe-Lu, and John Raynor from the KHJ morning crew, and Ethan the tech-talk guy from Bluesky communications. The Judges were Mike Aunoa; Carmella Gallace; Miss American Samoa Charity Gregory; Gene Suapilimai; and Kuki Tuiasosopo. The ASCC staff and the SEEDS club members also get their “props” for putting the entire event together. SEEDS sends a very special thanks to everyone who attended the evening and helped raised funds for their worthwhile cause!
