Friendly but intense competition this semester among the Student Clubs at the American Samoa Community College (ASCC) has resulted in two very memorable shows recently, the “MTV Showdown” last month and the “Big Man on Campus” competition this past weekend. As numerous observers have remarked, competition seems to bring out the best in the student performers as they work hard to come up with the best costumes and the most entertaining presentations.

The public will have the final opportunity of the semester to watch the Student Clubs vie to out-do each other when they perform during “Polynesian Night” this Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. in the ASCC gymnasium. “Polynesian Night” gives the students a chance to celebrate their indigenous performance traditions, as well as those of our neighboring island nations, and to bring those traditions new life through contemporary sensibilities and creative imagination. In other words, expect a Polynesian show with some unexpected twists.
Clubs confirmed to compete include Outsiders, Once Were Warriors (a/k/a Oh Dub Dub), Zero 6 Mafia, Chosen Few, House of Flying Daggers, and 685. Miss American Samoa Charity Gregory has volunteered to participate by performing the opening siva, and Miss ASCC Danielle Jennings will close the evening with the taualuga. Funds raised from the performance will go towards the end-of-semester Awards Ceremony to honor the Student Club who has accumulated the most points for various activities during fall 2006. At the Awards Ceremony, the winning club and the runners-up receive commemorative trophies as well as monetary awards to finance future club projects.
Advance-purchase tickets cost $5.00 for adults and $2.00 for children under 12. At the door, the price goes up to $8.00 for adults and $3.00 for children. For ticket information, call ASCC at 699-9155 and ask for the Student Government Association
