October 2, 2006 - ASCC-YANA Certifies Largest Group Yet in Crisis Counseling

A group of concerned faculty, staff and students at the American Samoa Community College (ASCC) formed the You Are Not Alone (YANA) Coalition in 2003, after an unprecedented wave of teen suicides in the Territory saw more then half a dozen young people, some of them ASCC students, take their own lives. Based on the simple idea that young men and women going through difficult emotional challenges should have someone to turn to, the YANA Coalition has spent the subsequent years educating ASCC students and community members in the basic principles of crisis intervention. Two basketball teams comprised mainly of students from the American Samoa Community College (ASCC) will depart this week to New Zealand to compete in the FIBA Oceania Youth Championships. October 23, 2006 - ASCC/CNR Works to Increase Taro Diversity in American Samoa

Strong winds and the ever-present threat of rain did not deter the staff of the Community & Natural Resources (CNR) division of the American Samoa Community College from holding their Taro Taste Test this past Thursday at the Avegalio family farm in Pava’ia’i. About 20 local farmers joined CNR staff for the lunchtime event, during which everyone took the opportunity to taste test five different strains of taro cultivated over the last seven months. October 25, 2006 - YANA Coalition at ASCC Celebrates Third Anniversary

From the loud applause in response to the singing onstage and the cheers following the speeches, the casual observer probably would not have realized that the roaring liveliness in the American Samoa Community College (ASCC) auditorium in fact celebrated an organization originally founded in response to heartbreaking tragedy.  The You Are Not Alone (YANA) Coalition at ASCC marked its third anniversary last week with a student rally that included recognition of its key players in the past, present and future. October 30, 2006 - FALL 2006 MTV Showdown Rock Packed House at ASCC

American Samoa may not get the real MTV, but the idea of staging an elaborate production to accompany a popular song has nonetheless taken firm root among our youth, as you can see every semester at the American Samoa Community College (ASCC) when the student clubs present their ever-popular “MTV Showdown”. This event, sponsored by the Student Government Association (SGA), gives the student clubs a chance to shine as performers when they compete to create the best overall stage presentation based on familiar pop songs of their choice. Each semester has seen the students “push the envelope” further in terms of elaborate dance routines, wild humor and sheer energy, as evidenced when the fall 2006 edition of the show took to the stage this past Friday evening in the ASCC auditorium.
