For the third straight year, the Nursing Department at ASCC conducted a medicine distribution drive to fight the debilitating disease filariasis. College faculty, staff and students, and members of the public received free medicine to prevent the disease on Wednesday and Thursday, September 13 th and 14 th, at several sites on the ASCC campus. The Board of Higher Education (BHE), the governing body which oversees the American Samoa Community College (ASCC) has re-elected incumbent chairman HC Pemerika Tauiliili to his third term in the position. The BHE has also chosen Dr. Oreta Togafau for another term as Vice Chairman. With more than a decade of continuous service to the BHE, Dr. Togafau currently holds the distinction as the longest-serving Board member. More... September 16, 2006 - ASCC Student Take up Coastal cleanup Challenge The 50 ASCC students who participated in the International Coastal Clean-up on Saturday, September 16 th, at Lions Park in Tafuna found themselves awed by the sight of “more trash than you could imagine.” Much of the trash had been covered by sand blown up from the beach, or stuck in the remaining mangroves of the lagoon. ''Not only was there so much trash, but the objects that you find are ridiculous. We found slippers, beer bottles, a lot of styrofoam, and even kitchen appliances,” commented Jennifer Mauigoa, Once Were Warriors club member. More... “I feel lucky to be chosen for this award out of 25,000 other students,” says 20 year old American Samoa Community College (ASCC) student Shinar Ieti of Vailoa. Shinar recently received news that she has been chosen as the recipient of a $250 scholarship award from the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) International Honor Society and The National Dean’s List. As part of her membership in the ASCC chapter of the prestigious honors society, Shinar, along with 25,000 other PTK members across the nation, submitted the forms for inclusion on The National Dean’s List.
