GLBA Compliance at ASCC
What is GLBA?
The Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLBA) establishes standards for safeguarding student information at institutions that handle Title IV financial aid.
GLBA Objectives
- Ensure the security and confidentiality of student information
- Protect against anticipated threats or hazards to the security or integrity of information
- Protect against unauthorized access that could result in substantial harm to students
Why GLBA Matters: Institutions handling Title IV aid must comply with the GLBA Safeguards Rule. Non-compliance could result in loss of Title IV program participation or institutional funding.

What is Cybersecurity?
Cybersecurity is the art of protecting networks, devices, and data from unauthorized access or criminal use, and the practice of ensuring confidentiality, integrity, and availability of information.
Why It's Important: Cybersecurity is critical for protecting data and staying in compliance with GLBA requirements.
Top 5 Cybersecurity Threats in 2025
1. Social Engineering / Phishing
Deceptive attempts to obtain sensitive information through fraudulent communications
2. Ransomware
Malicious software that encrypts data, now often includes data theft components
3. Zero-Day & Critical Vulnerability Exploits
Attacks targeting previously unknown software vulnerabilities
4. Supply-Chain Attacks
Compromising systems through trusted third-party vendors or software
5. AI-Driven / Adaptive Attacks
Sophisticated attacks using AI, including deepfakes and advanced threats
Recognizing Phishing Emails
When reviewing suspicious emails, always check:
- From Email Address: Does it match the supposed sender's official email?
- To Email Address: Is it sent to multiple recipients or a generic address?
- Salutation: Is it generic ("Dear User") or personalized?
- Links: Hover over links before clicking—do they go to legitimate domains?
- Urgency: Does it create false urgency or pressure you to act immediately?
- Requests for Information: Does it ask for passwords, personal information, or financial data?
⚠️ Warning Signs of Phishing
Be especially cautious of emails that:
- Come from hacked legitimate email accounts
- Contain suspicious links or attachments
- Request urgent action or threaten consequences
- Ask you to verify account information
- Contain spelling or grammatical errors
- Offer deals that seem too good to be true
If you suspect a phishing email: Do not click any links or download attachments. Report it to MIS immediately at support@amsamoa.edu or ext. 3402.
